Warm Up with Purpose, Not Just a Timer

A warm-up is a transition into the session you are about to do. Give it a purpose: arrive, get moving comfortably and rehearse the movements you plan to train.

Start from today’s session

Look at your plan before choosing what to do. A strength session and a cardio session may call for different preparation. Ask a qualified trainer to help you choose a suitable warm-up rather than copying a routine simply because it looks demanding.

Build gradually

Public exercise guidance recommends preparing before more vigorous activity. Start at an easier level and increase gradually as appropriate to you. Preparation should not leave you exhausted before the main work begins.

Rehearse the setup

Use the warm-up to check equipment adjustments, your available space and the movement you intend to perform. With strength equipment, practise at a manageable load and seek coaching if the technique is unfamiliar.

Respond to how you feel

Do not treat a timer as permission to ignore pain or unusual symptoms. Stop and seek appropriate advice if something feels wrong. For general preparation ideas, see the NHS guide linked below.
